AUB Graduation Shows 2015

As we're AUB Alumni ourselves we never miss a chance to visit the Higher Education exhibitions every year. It's a great opportunity to see what ideas the new set of designers and makers will be taking out into the industry with them, which may just end up shaping the next trends in a whole range of fields.

We always start with a visit to BAHons Modelmaking, since we're both modelmaking graduates we love seeing the range of projects and skills on show. It's always interesting to see how the favoured field changes each year; some years have a lot of architectural models, others tend towards animation, sculpture or large scale models. Here's a selection of images showing the sort of thing you could see this year:

Architectural models are big users of laser cutting.

Another favourite of ours is BAHons Textiles; it's always inspiring to see how many different approaches there are to the craft. Lasercutting always make an appearance as students explore how to create a malleable fabric from hard materials. Here are some particularly impressive examples of engraving and shaping acrylic, card and nylon wire; leather was also a popular choice:

We currently work with a few fashion designers and we're always looking for more, so if these examples inspire you get in touch with us at designs@heycreate.co.uk.

BAHons Architecture is a course we find ourselves working with quite frequently, as lasercutting is heavily used to create architectural models. Here are a few examples of lasercut models (some of which we did the cutting for), but the full range of projects on display also included some pretty abstract representations:

The beer bottle wasn't part of the display!

BAHons Illustration and Graphic Design share a lot in common, and both shows are always great to see for the breadth of ideas on show. We always enjoy working with Graphic Design students as they come up with some very creative ways of using laser cutting in their work, and it's a nice contrast to the typically more technical work we do for other courses. Unfortunately at this point my camera was dying so I wasn't able to take as many pictures!

Both books were from a student called Laura Velasquez and used cutting to empahasize the message behind the books. As the pages were printed in advance it was critical to make sure they were cut in the right order!

This student's work recently appeared on Creative Bloq's website.

There was much more to see, and way too much for a single visit! Needless to say we look forward to working with more Bournemouth University and AUB students in the new term, and spotting all the projects we worked on at the graduation shows!

We're always available to be reached at designs@heycreate.co.uk or via the other means listed on our website at heycreate.co.uk, and are always happy to dispense advice on lasercutting, whether it's as simple as how to set up a file or how to make a complete architectural model.

Here's a selection of images from the rest of the show to finish off, but there was much more to see than this!
